Isla
Mujeres, or The Island of Women, is situated in the Mexican Caribbean, a
convenient 1 hour transfer from Cancun airport. The most exotic
explanation of how it got its name is that pirates used to keep their
women there whilst away on the mainland on pirating business. The more
credible explanation is that the name is derived from the discovery by
conquistador Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba of the many impressive
statues of a Mayan moon goddess. Either way, the island today
is an absolutely delightful
mix of authentic and colorful Caribbean-style clapboard houses, fishing
boats, perfect beaches and open air cafes and restaurants clustered
around the pedestrianised 'centro' of Calle Hidalgo. Very
different to the mainland, diving from this quirky little island is as
diverse as the island itself. The most popular is diving in the Marine
Parks of Manchones, Punta Sur and Punta Nizuc. Here the marine life is
varied and plentiful, schools of tang and wrasse co-habitate with
Grouper and Sea Turtles. There are a number of shipwrecks in the area
situated at various depths. We'll visit the incredible underwater museum
where 400 statues have been built as a way to promote coral growth and
marine life. It is now one of the largest and most popular artificial
reefs in the world. We will also have the opportunity to do
Cenote diving and snorkel with Whale Sharks.

space is limited to 12 divers total.
